JANNIS KOUNELLIS: RELAMPAGOS SOBRE MÉXICO REVIEW

Like I shared with you on another post earlier this month, we have a new museum in my town, and every few months they hold an installation exhibition, so at the beginning of the year I attended their first ever, as the museum had just opened, and they decided to host Janis Kounellis’ work, the exhibition made up of off several installations, was called Relámpagos Sobre México, which translates to something like Lighting Bolts Over Mexico.

Como te compartí en un post anterior éste mes, hay un nuevo museo en la ciudad, y cada equis meses tienen una exhibición nueva, así que a principios de año fui a la primera con la que inauguraron el recinto, el que tuvo el honor de exhibir su trabajo por primera vez aquí fue Janis Kounellis, la exhibición constaba de varias instalaciones, y se tituló Relámpagos Sobre México.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Kounellis’ work and background, he’s a greek contemporary artist, he focuses mainly on installations, and he’s one of the biggest representatives of Povera Art (From the Italian “poor art” is art made from materials that are considered not worthy, scraps, waste), the best part of this installation is that Janis recovered the materials from the area around the museum, you must know that Museo Espacio is part of a project called MECA which stands for Macro Space for the Culture and the Arts, it’s an ambitious project that will spread a concert hall, a forum and a workshop for National Graphics, over 212 acres, this area used to be the railroad garages back in the day, the space now held by the museum was back then a wood workshop, so most of the remaining space is still covered by what’s left of these buildings, that’s where Janis got the scraps of metal, wood, metal barrels, among other stuff to create this amazing piece.

Para quienes no conocen el trabajo de Kounellis, es un artista contemporáneo nacido en Grecia, su trabajo es en su mayoría instalaciones, y es uno de los representantes más grandes y renombrados del Arte Povera (del Italiano “arte pobre”, así se denomina el arte hecho con materiales “pobres”, desechos), la mejor parte de ésta instalación es que Janis recuperó todos os materiales para su obra de las áreas circundantes al museo, debes saber que el Museo Espacio es parte de un ambicioso proyecto llamado MECA (Macro Espacio para la Cultura y las Artes), éste proyecto de 86 hectáreas contendrá además del museo una sala para conciertos, un foro y un Taller para las Gráficas Nacionales, éste espacio solía ser los talleres del ferrocarril en aquella época, el espacio en el que está ubicado hoy en día el museo solía ser el área de carpintería de los talleres, por lo que gran parte de éste espacio circundante sigue lleno de lo que fue un importante punto de parada para todos los ferrocarriles nacionales, y es de ahí que Janis pudo recolectar los pedazos de metal, madera, barriles, etc. que se convirtieron en los Relámpagos Sobre México.

At the guided tour they told us that Mr. Kounellis chose each piece of metal and each piece present in the exhibit himself, it’s indeed an impressive work of art that represents that part of Aguascalientes’ past that we refuse to forget. I’m not art critic, but I can say this made me think a lot about what I was seeing and the symbolism contained in it, I found it impressive and completely relevant, though my mom found it kind of sad I can’t say that.

Durante la visita guiada nos dijeron que Kounellis eligió cada pedazo de metal y cada pieza usada en la exhibición, él mismo, tenía grupos de gente que le llevaba materiales para su aprobación, en verdad fue una exhibición impresionante que creo representa esa parte del pasado de Aguascalientes que nos negamos a olvidar. Obvio no soy ninguna crítica de arte, mis conocimientos se limitan a lo que aprendes en la escuela de diseño y mi curso de Introducción al Arte por PennState, pero fue una obra que sin duda me hizo pensar muchísimo, fue una obra llena de simbolismos, me pareció impresionante y muy relevante al momento que se vive en la ciudad, a mi mamá le pareció muy triste, pero de algún modo yo la encontré esperanzadora, ya que siempre se puede construir algo bello hasta de lo “feo”
