ROXY FESTIVAL MEMORIES

If you follow me on Instagram, you’re aware that the past weekend I attended a music festival in Guadalajara called Roxy Festival, and today I want to share all about it with you.

Si me sigues en Instagram, sabes que el finde pasado estuve en un festival en Guadalajara, llamado Roxy Festival, y hoy quiero compartirte mi experiencia.

This wasn’t my first music festival, I’ve been to Corona Capital a couple of times before, my expectations for this one were to see a huge one like CC, but it actually was a rather small one, 13 artists were on the bill this time, nothing compared to the 50+ that CC features in two days.

Cabe destacar que no era mi primer festival, había ido un par de veces al Corona Capital anteriormente, por lo que mis expectativas para éste eran las de un evento enorme, tipo el Corona, pero la verdad es que fue un evento super pequeño, con 13 artistas en el cartel en ésta ocasión, nada comparado a los más de 50 que el CC presenta en dos días.

Bae and I drove to Guadalajara that morning, as it is a 3 hr drive from out hometown, we’d booked a room at a nearby hotel, less than a mile away from the venue, which was perfect, we left our stuff and went for a bite before hitting up the concert, we had tortas ahogadas which is a typical dish in Guadalajara.

Bae y yo manejamos a Guadalajara esa mañana, está a sólo tres horas de Aguascalientes, teníamos reservado una habitación en un hotel cercano al evento, a menos de 1 km, lo cual estaba perfecto, dejamos nuestras cosas y fuimos por algo de comer antes de llegar al concierto, obvio comimos tortas ahogadas, super típicas de Guadalajara.

After lunch we made our way to the event, we thought we’d walk there, as it was so close, but oh surprise, they’d changed the entrance to the festival, so we jumped into a cab, cause it was further than we thought. TBH the entrance to the place was a hassle, so so complicated, as the tickets weren’t sold through Ticketmaster but another company, I didn’t like it at all, as they made it so complicated.

Después de comer nos dirigimos al evento, pensamos en caminar ya que nos quedaba muy cerca, pero oh sorpresa, habían cambiado la entrada al festival a la avenida del otro lado, así que tomamos un taxi, porque para caminar hasta allá, ¡no gracias! La verdad es que la entrada al evento fue una friega, lo hicieron super complicado, te pedían copia de tu identificación y llenar todo un formulario, no sé si se deba a que no vendieron los boletos a través de Ticketmaster, sino otra compañía, pero la neta fue bastante molesto ya que fue algo complicado.

Once we got in there was some walking to do, the way was lined with David Bowie pictures taken from his time in Mexico, as the event was some sort of a tribute to the late musician.

Ya que entramos tuvimos que caminar bastante para llegar al lugar, el camino estaba flanqueado con fotografías de David Bowie en una de sus visitas a México, pues el evento era una especie de tributo al difunto cantante.

The festival wasn’t only about the music, as there were several food trucks, even one for one of the countries finest wineries, Monte Xanic (which I’m a fan of), and a gourmet pavillion that featured some of Guadalajara’s best chefs cooking in situ, that area was full of picnic tables with parasols, small tables made of wooden pallets with lots of cushions around them on the grass, and teepees to hide from the sun, it was a nice spot to hang out.

El festival no sólo era sobre la música, fue también un evento gastronómico lleno de foodtrucks, me llamó la atención la presencia de Monte Xanic (una casa vinícola de las mejores en México, de cuyos vinos soy fan), y un pabellón gourmet con algunos de los mejores chefs de Guadalajara cocinando in situ, esa área se encontraba llena de mesas y sillas bajo grandes sombrillas, mesitas bajas hechas con pallets de madera rodeadas de cojines en el área del pasto y tipis para ocultarte del sol, un lindo lugar para pasar el rato. 

THE MUSIC

We saw almost all of the bands, except for maybe three? I think it was the first two we missed and then a band called Caloncho, but aside from that we saw everyone else, I loved David Brighton’s set, he’s supposed to be the best Bowie impersonator in the world, and he delivered, I really wished he could’ve played a while more, I danced my heart out and had an awesome time.

Vimos a casi todas las bandas, excepto unas tres, creo que fueron las primeras dos que nos perdimos y una banda llamada Caloncho, pero además de ésto vimos a todos los demás, adoré el set de David Brighton, se supone que es el mejor imitador de David Bowie en el mundo, y lo cumplió, me hubiese gustado que tocara más, bailé un montón y me divertí como enana.

The surprise to us was Hiromi, a trio that plays prog jazz, they blew my mind, also, James, neither bae nor I knew them, though I later found out they’ve been around since the 80’s, they put on an awesome show, and you could really feel the energy from the crowd, they’re now on my Spotify collection 🙂

La sorpresa para nosotros fue Hiromi, un trío que toca jazz progresivo, estuvieron asombrosos, además, James, ni bae ni yo los conocíamos, aunque luego supimos que existen desde los 80’s, su show fue maravilloso y se sentía una increíble energía del público, ya están en mi colección de Spotify 🙂

OUR FAVORITES

Fito Paez, for those of you who don’t know him, he’s an Argentinian rock musician who’s been around since ’79, bae’s liked him for a long time, I only listened to him about two years ago when we went to one of his shows, and I’ve loved him ever since, as always he put on a great show, and he’s very loved by the Mexican crowd, I also danced a lot to his set, and he put a big smile on my face.

Fito Paez, para quienes no lo conocen, es un músico de rock, argentino que ha estado en la música desde el 79, bae es fan de él desde hace mucho tiempo, yo lo escuché por primera vez hace dos años que fuimos a un concierto, y me ha encantado desde entonces, como siempre, dio un gran show, y es muy querido por el público mexicano, bailé bastante con su música y me hizo sonreír un montón. 

Placebo is a band I’ve liked since I was about 13 years old, and I’ve been wanting to go to a show of theirs ever since, yet I’d never been able for one reason or the other, this year they’re on their 20 year anniversary tour, I sang along to every word and felt my heart was close to exploding on my chest, it was the best thing ever, all I could think about was how my 13 year old self would be so proud of that moment.

Placebo es una banda que he amado desde los 13 años, y desde entonces he querido ir a un concierto, pero por alguna u otra razón nunca me había sido posible, éste año están en su gira de 20 años, canté cada canción hasta que me dolió la garganta y sentí mi corazón a dos de explotar de felicidad, fue una excelente experiencia, sólo sigo pensando lo orgullosa que está de mí la Daniela de 13 años.

At 15 I was obsessed with The Smiths, so obviously I’m a big Morrissey fan, he was the main reason I went to this festival, I actually hate the guy, he’s insufferable, it took him about 40 minutes to get on stage, he asked to stop selling meat 1.5 hrs before his set and 1 hr after, but once he got onstage I forgot about my hatred for the man and I sang every song, yelled and clapped for him, best show ever, thank you Moz!

A los 15 estaba obsesionada con The Smiths, así que obviamente soy una gran fan de Morrissey, fue la razón principal de ir all festival, la neta es que lo odio, es insufrible, le tomó 40 minutos en subir al escenario, pidió que dejaran de vender carne una hora y media antes de su set y una después, pero ya que se subió al escenario se me olvidó lo gordo que me cae y canté cada canción, grité y le aplaudí, uno de los mejores shows, ¡gracias Moz!

So that was pretty much it, we didn’t stay for Empire of the Sun’s set, as we were so tired, we got to our hotel at 3am, dying, and in much need of water, a shower and a bed, but it was so worth it.

Así estuvo el Roxy Festival, la verdad no nos quedamos al set de Empire of the Sun, porque estábamos cansadísimos, llegamos al hotel a las 3am, muertos y con gran necesidad de agua, una ducha y una cama, pero valió mucho la pena.
