I was born in Mexico City 27 years ago, and just a couple of years before, Mexico had lived one of the greatest tragedies it would face as a country, the 1985 earthquake, that was 32 years and 1 day ago…

As I’m typing this on September 19th, 2017, I have mascara running down my cheeks, it’s been 9 hours since we heard that today of all days, Mexico City was reliving the 1985 tragedy, literaly, a 7.1 earthquake on the Richter scale hit the city at around 13:14 a few minutes after I knew I was already texting y family and friends who unlike me, live there, thank goodness, they’re all okay, but still, realization hasn’t hit me.

Fast-forward two hours later as I’m getting tons of videos through social media where I can see buildings falling and the streets of my beloved “CDMX” shaking with fear. Then it hits me, these are my people, these are people with lives and families and loved ones, and some of them are missing, some of them can’t get news on their loved ones, some are hurt, and worst, some are dead, tears.

As I get home and I see my mom and I realize we’re all okay I break down in tears, I am so afraid of what will happen to my fellow Mexicans, I keep seeing these videos and each one makes it more real than the previous one.

Eight hours later I’m sitting at home, sharing helpful information via my social media accounts, and I’m watching the news, a school fell to the ground, two kids just got rescued, but there are many more inside, the news show people, civilians helping out to get people out of the debris, digging, some with shovels and picks, some use their bare hands, but everyone’s helping get total strangers to safety, this is probably one of the most powerful images I see.

Mexico and Mexican people have gotten a lot of bad rep, especially in the last couple of years, but seeing this, this is what Mexican people are, we are hard workers, we are supportive and we love our country, we are not afraid to get our hands dirty, we share even if we don’t have much, we are GOOD PEOPLE.

I cry some more, it pains me to see these people hurting, people who have probably worked their whole lives to have the house they have now, to build a small business, and who might’ve just lost it all in a couple of minutes, we don’t deserve this, people who is willing to dig through debris with their bare hands until they bleed don’t deserve the bad things that happen in here, we don’t deserve violence, or corruption, or bad politicians, we deserve so much more, yet we keep our high spirits at all time, and we keep working our butts off to bring bread to the table, so adding this and last week’s earthquakes on top of what we deal with on a daily basis was just too much.

I love my country so, so much, I’ve traveled some and I’ve seen some of the world, and met some beautiful people and places and still, I wouldn’t change where I was born for anything in the world, I’m a proud Mexican who is asking you to keep my country and my people in your prayers.

xoxo

  13. Been staying up to date on the latest developments. Hoping they find more people alive. Also wanted to say that I agree that the people of Mexico deserve so much better. I read a blog called borderlandbeat and its disturbing reading about the corruption at the highest level. The violence too. Its the people of Mexico who have endured so much suffering yet are so humble and welcoming. I hope one day that Mexico will be released from this corruption and violence. It’s been far too long. The Mexican people deserve security and honest law !!

    1. THANK YOU! Your words brought tears to my eyes, I really hope your wishes for us become true, I think my generation is starting to want a change and work towards that, we are realizing the way our country has lived for so many years is not okay, and we want better for us and our future children, so hopefully we won’t disappoint and make a change for good 🙂

  14. I’m glad to hear that your family is ok. I have family in Mexico, and it pains me to see that this happened. What astounds me though is that not many people are talking about it. I feel like when Japan was struck in 2011, so many people talked about it and brought awareness for donations to help Japan rebuild and heal, but not the same is going for Mexico. I hope I can bring awareness for it as well and find a good charity to help Mexico. With lots of love.

    1. Thank you Natalie! Is your family okay? I’ve shared ways to donate on my latest instagram post 🙂 have a great week and God bless you! 🙂
