A LESSON IN BASICS: WHAT ARE BASICS AND WHY DO I NEED THEM?

If you remembermy Beauty Essentials Series and liked it, you will love this one, I decided to make this after Mariana (my friend from work), and my mom asked that I write something like this. So I thought about doing it in a single post but I think it will be so much more helpful if I make it a series.

This basics series’ goal is to help you guys realize that you can be stylish without the need to have a ton of clothes and the power of basics, so let’s start!

Si recuerdas mi serie de Beauty Essentials y te gustó vas a amar esta, decidí hacer este post después de que mi amiga del trabajo, Mariana y mi mami me pidieron que hiciera algo por el estilo. Así que primero pensé en hacer un solo post, pero creo que será de más ayuda que lo haga una serie.

La idea de ésta serie sobre los básicos es ayudarte a darte cuenta de que puedes tener estilo sin la necesidad de tener muchísima ropa y el súper poder de los básicos, así que empecemos!

WHAT ARE BASICS?

Ok so I’m going to answer these questions in the easiest way I can, we don’t want this to be boring. A basic is a piece of clothing that everyone needs in their closet, that is a classic, and that is easy to match with different pieces and styles.

Examples? A white cotton tee, a pair of Levis’ jeans, a black cardigan.

¿QUÉ SON LOS BÁSICOS?

Voy a intentar responder estas preguntas del modo más sencillo posible, no quiero hacer esto aburrido. Un básico es una prenda de vestir que todos necesitamos en nuestro closet, son piezas clásicas que son sencillas de combinar con otras prendas y estilos.

Por ejemplo, una playera blanca de algodón, un par de Levis’, un cárdigan negro.

WHY DO I NEED THEM?

Like I said before, these are classics, which means they won’t be going out of style any time soon and they’re the foundation to a well curated wardrobe, they’ll make getting dressed each morning so much easier.

¿POR QUÉ LOS NECESITO?

Como dije antes, son prendas clásicas, lo que significa que no pasarán de moda pronto y son la base para un guardarropa bien curado, además de que harán vestirse cada mañana mucho más sencillo.

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT THEM?

Basics are something that you might want to invest in, cause you’re gonna be wearing them heavily, so it’s better to splurge on them as you won’t be getting new ones every season.

Another thing you might wanna consider is that when shopping for basics it’s better to wait until you find the perfect fit than buying on impulse, you’re gonna be wearing these A LOT, trust me, so you want them to fit to a tee, what happens if you find the perfect basic jeans, or blazer or LBD but it looks weird or is too long? There’re some pieces you can always have tailored, but some are best to just keep looking until you find Mr. Right.

How do I know if something is a basic? Well, most brands nowadays have a basics section, but in case they don’t, look for classic silhouettes, things that we know don’t change over the years, such as white button up shirts, white tees, a pair of Levis’, a trench coat, a pair of loafers, etc, I’ll get into detail in following posts, don’t worry, another important thing, colors and materials, try to pick neutrals, these are colors that you can match with lots of other seasonal colors, such as black, white, navy, gray, tan, maybe even red, and when it comes to shoes, leopard print is a neutral to me.

¿QUÉ DEBO SABER SOBRE ELLOS?

Son algo en lo que quizá quieras invertir, porque los vas a usar bastante, así que es preferible gastar un poco más en ellos ya que no estarás comprando nuevos cada temporada.

Otra cosa que debes considerar cuando compres básicos es que es mejor esperar a encontrar el que te queda perfecto a comprar de impulso, vas a usar estas prendas MUCHÍSIMO, créeme, así que quieres que te queden pintadas, ¿qué pasa si encuentras los jeans perfectos, o un blazer o ese vestidito negro se ve raro o muy largo? Siempre hay prendas que un sastre puede alterar, y hay algunos casos en los que es mejor esperar a encontrar LA prenda.

¿Cómo sé si algo es un básico? La mayoría de las marcas actualmente, tienen una sección de básicos, así que es sencillo identificarlos, pero si este no es el caso, busca prendas que no cambian con el paso de los años, una camisa blanca, una playera blanca, un par de jeans Levis’, una gabardina, unos mocasines, etc. no te apures, en los posts siguientes veremos esto más a detalle, algo más que es importante mencionar, ¿Qué colores son básicos? Busca tonos que siempre puedes usar y que son fáciles de combinar con otros colores de temporada, blanco, negro, gris, azul marino, rojo, beige, son buenas ideas, y hablando de zapatos, el estampado de leopardo es un neutro.
