WHAT IS LAYERING?

In case you’re not familiar with this term, layering consists on building an outfit with layers of clothing, this is an amazing way to give an outfit some depth and make it more interesting, when layering don’t be affraid of mixing different lenghts and materials, if you’re unsure about it try sticking to a color palette like in the images bellow.

¿QUÉ ES EL LAYERING?

Layering (lei-e-rin) viene de la palabra layer en inglés, que significa “capa”, éste término es usado para describir un modo de armar outfits en el que se usan las capas para darle profundidad a un outfit y hacerlo más interesante, cuando armamos un outfit de éste modo no tengas miedo de mezclar largos y materiales, si le dudas mantente en una sola paleta de color como en las imágenes de abajo.

WHAT’S IT GOT TO DO WITH BASICS?

Everything! Basics are the foundation to layering success, how? If you mix only statement pieces two things can happen, a) You’ll end up looking like a street style picture circa 2008 (not that it’s a bad thing) and b) You’ll be spending lots of money on trendy pieces and with a wardrobe full of nothing to wears as soon as the season ends and they go out of style, so when layering you want to start with basics and pile on from there, throw in a statement piece like your pants, or coat or even shoes or accessories, if you take a look at the pictures in this post you’ll realize that most of these outfits (all from ZARA so you can see how affordable it is to build a cool outfit) have at least one basic piece, be it a pair of jeans, a t-shirt, a shirt, and so on.

¿Y ESO QUÉ TIENE QUE VER CON LA NAVIDAD?

Todo! Los básicos son la base para un layering exitoso, ¿cómo? si sólo mezclamos piezas statement dos cosas pueden pasar, a) Te vas a ver como una foto de street style por ahí del 2008 (no que sea algo malo) y b) Estarás gastando un montón de dinero en prendas de moda y con un guardarropa lleno de nada que ponerte cuando se acabe la temporada y pasen de moda, así que cuando hagas layering quieres empezar con los básicos e ir construyendo desde ahí, poner algunas statement pieces como unos pantalones estampados, un abrigo, blusa o quizá algún accesorio, si te fijas bien en las fotos puedes darte cuenta de que en la mayoría de éstos outfits (todos de ZARA, para que veas que tan al alcance de todos está armar outfits cool) tienen al menos una prenda básica, ya sean unos jeans, una playera o una camisa.

WHAT IS A STATEMENT PIECE?

Statement pieces are pieces that are in style at a certain moment in time or that attract more attention to your outfit, to give an example this season it’s be something such as culottes or an off shoulders top or maybe a pair of mules. These pieces are something that you might want to skimp on as you’ll only be wearing them for such time, but that are necessary if your goal is to look stylish or have a more interesting outfit.

¿QUÉ ES UNA STATEMENT PIECE?

Statement piece (es-teit-ment-pis) quizá la mejor traducción ya que no hay una que sea literal es pieza clave, es una prenda que está en tendencia en un momento determinado o que atrae una mayor atención a tu outfit, para poner un ejemplo de esta temporada puede ser algo así como un par de culottes o un top de hombros caídos, quizá hasta un par de mules. Éstas piezas clave son algo en lo que quizá no quieras invertir mucho, ya que las usarás por un tiempo determinado y quizá no las vuelvas a tocar (así es ésto de la moda), pero son necesarias si tu meta es verte stylish o que tus outfits sean más interesantes.

HOW DO I GET MY LAYERING GAME ON POINT?

To be honest there’s no magic formula for this, it takes practice and sometimes inspiration, make a board on PINTEREST or save the pictures in a folder on your computer for inspiration, pin looks you love and then analize them, what makes you like an outfit? is it the colors? the silhouettes? the patterns? analize all these variables and take mental notes, be adventurous, it’s just clothes, make smart purchases, think of different ways to pair a piece with stuff you already own, avoid impulse buys, observe.

¿CÓMO LE HAGO PARA PERFECCIONAR ÉSTO DEL LAYERING?

Para ser honesta no hay una fórmula mágica, es cuestión de práctica e inspiración, has un tablero en PINTEREST o guarda las imágenes en tu computadora para que te sirvan de inspiración, guarda looks que amas y analízalos, ¿qué hace que ames un outfit? ¿Los colores, siluetas, estampados? Analiza todas estas variables y has notas mentales, se atrevida, sólo es ropa, compra de manera inteligente, piensa en maneras de combinar una prenda con cosas que ya tienes, evita las compras por impulso, observa.
