ONLINE SHOPPING: TIPS & TRICKS

Hi guys! So I’ve had a couple of requests over the last few months to post something like this in here, tips and tricks for shopping online!

¡Hola! He tenido varias peticiones los últimos meses de publicar algo así aquí, tips y trucos para comprar en línea, así que aquí se los comparto.

Even if it’s freaking 2018 there’s still people who’s wary of online shopping, especially when it involves clothes or accessories (my dad would be right there) and even when older people are the ones who fear online shopping for clothes the most, I’ve realized many people my age (at least in Mexico) still have some concerns when talking about this subject, of course there’s always the other side (like myself and plenty friends of mine) who loooove online shopping.

Aún cuando estamos en pleno 2018 aún hay gente que teme comprar en línea, en especial cuando se trata de ropa y accesorios (onda mi papá) y aún si es más la gente mayor la que le teme a este tipo de compras, me he dado cuenta de que aún gente de mi edad (al menos en México) aún tiene algunas dudas en el tema, y obvio siempre hay gente que está en el polo opuesto (como yo), que aman las compras en línea.

These days you can pretty much get anything on demand with a few clicks or taps on the screen of your phone (cue Bae who is obsessed with Amazon) from furniture to toilet paper and everything in between, and it is something I feel my generation loves!

En estos tiempos puedes tener básicamente lo que quieras, cuando quieras con unos cuantos clicks o toques en la pantalla de tu celular (onda Bae que está obsesionado con Amazon), desde muebles hasta papel de baño y todo lo que está en medio, y creo que es algo que la gente de mi generación ama.

But why do we love online shopping? I think it solves a lot of different problems for a lot of people, from those who are wary of social interaction, to those who simply just don’t have the time to go to an actual store and look for whatever it is that they want to buy, plus who doesn’t love coming home to finding you’ve got a package that you’ve been waiting for? I personally love it!

Pero, ¿por qué amamos comprar en línea? Creo que es porque resuelve muchos problemas a mucho tipo de personas, desde aquellos que detestan la interacción social hasta aquellos que simplemente no tienen el tiempo de ir a una tienda de verdad y buscar lo que sea que necesiten comprar, además, ¿a quién no le gusta llegar a casa y tener un paquete esperando? Yo en lo personal lo amo.

And still, why is there people who fear it so much? Is it cause they need the human interaction? Or cause they are so used to actually seeing things and feeling them before buying them? Do they fear it’ll be a scam? Maybe, but if you learn to online shop smartly I think there’s little to fear, so here are some of my personal tips and tricks.

Y a pesar de todas esas bondades, ¿por qué hay quien le teme tanto? ¿será que necesitan la interacción social? o quizá están acostumbrados a ver y tocar el producto aún antes de comprarlo. ¿les da miedo ser estafados? quizá, pero si aprendes a comprar en línea de manera inteligente creo que es poco a lo que debemos temerle, así que aquí están mi consejos.

IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS

Now this is just common sense, but I still feel like I need to mention it, if a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is and you’ll end up being scammed, especially if it’s on a site you’ve never heard of, just go with your gut, that iPhone X for $25? Yeah, probably a scam, designer bags for only a fraction of their real retail value? Stay away.

e.g: Gucci bag on Ebay price in GBP: 49.99; Similar Gucci Bag on Gucci webpage, price in USD: 3,200

SI SUENA MUY BUENO PARA SER REAL, PROBABLEMENTE LO SEA

Eso es solo cosa de sentido común, pero siento que debo decirlo, si una oferta suena demasiado buena para ser cierta, probablemente lo sea y te están estafando, en especial si es en un sitio del que nunca has oído, sigue tu intuición, ¿ese iPhone X for $1000? Probablemente es una estafa, ¿bolsas de diseñador por una pequeña fracción de su precio real en el mercado? aléjate.

PAY ATTENTION TO URLS

Before proceeding to payment make sure you’re on a secure site, pay close attention to the URL of the site and make sure it is marked as secure by your browser, if it looks fishy, I’d stay away from it.

PRESTA ATENCIÓN A LAS URLS

Antes de proceder al pago asegúrate de estar en un sitio seguro, presta mucha atención a la dirección del sitio y asegúrate de que esté marcada como segura por tu navegador, si se ve sospechosa, mantente alejada de ella.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

If you find a new site you’ve never heard of but you still want to buy from them, do your research, look them up online, these days you can get online reviews for pretty much anything, I loooove watching Patricia Bright‘s videos where she tells you the honest truth about many popular online clothing stores, so just make sure, it doesn’t have bad reviews.

INVESTIGA

Si encuentras una página de la que nunca has escuchado pero quieres comprar algo en ella, investiga, googlealos, en esta época puedes encontrar reseñas en línea para lo que sea, a mi me encanta ver videos en youtube con reseñas de tiendas de ropa en línea, así que asegurate que no tenga malas reseñas.

GO TO TRUSTED SITES ONLY

How about starting at well known brands’ sites? Looking for sneakers? Go the the brand’s site, or to stores you actually know IRL and have purchased from before, this is the safest option if it’s your first shot at online shopping, this way is safer and it will make you feel more comfortable knowing there’s a physical store you can always turn to if you’ve any concerns about the products you end up getting. And even if it hasn’t got a physical store, there’s a lot of online stores that have by now built a reputation, such as Amazon, The Outnet, ASOS, MyTheresa and so on, like I said before, do your research.

VE A SITIOS DE CONFIANZA 

Empieza por comprar en sitios de marcas conocidas, ¿buscas unos tennis? ve al sitio de la marca que usualmente compras, o a sitios de marcas que conoces en la vida real y de donde has comprado con anterioridad, esta es una opción segura si es tu primera vez comprando por internet, de este modo es más seguro y te hará sentir cómodo el saber que hay una tienda física a la cual puedes acudir con cualquier queja del producto recibido. Y aunque no tenga una tienda física hay tiendas en línea que ya tienen una reputación, como Amazon, The Outnet, ASOS, MyTheresa, etc. y como dije antes, investiga.

WANT FREE SHIPPING?

Now this is something that I tried a couple of months ago and I’ve only done it once and it was with a store that has also IRL shops, but I think it’s a good idea, so, many stores offer you free shipping if you buy a certain ammount from them, now who wants to pay for shipping right? So what I did was I bought that ammount of products and after I got the package I went to the store and returned some items I’d just added to my cart to make free shipping, if you’ve got the time to go and do a in store return, it’s worth it if not? Why not team up with another friend and buy it all in one order so you can a) get free shipping b) split the cost.

¿QUIERES ENVÍO GRATIS?

Esto es algo que intenté hace unos meses, sólo lo hice una vez y fue con una tienda que tiene tiendas físicas también, pero me pareció buena idea, hay muchas tiendas que te ofrecen envío gratis si compras más de cierta cantidad, la verdad es que nadie quiere pagar el envío ¿cierto? Así que lo hice fue elegir lo que quería y después agregar algo a mi compra que me ayudara a alcanzar envío gratis, al recibir mi paquete, fui a la tienda y devolví ese artículo, y chrrriiin, envío gratis, la verdad es que es una buena opción si tienes tiempo de ir a la tienda a hacer la devolución y esperar las dos semanas en promedio que toma hacer la devolución a tu tarjeta. Otro tip sería compar todo en una orden junto con una amiga para así alcanzar el envío gratis o dividirse el costo del envío. 🙂

RETURNS

Most online stores have the options of free returns if what you buy doesn’t fit (clothing and shoe wise) or isn’t what you’re expecting, just make sure to read their return policies carefully. When you talk about stores like Zara that has online shopping and in store shopping you can always stop by the store and return what you didn’t like, I did this once where the skirt I got didn’t look good on me and I didn’t like the fabric of a top I got, they were super nice about it and I got my money back 24hrs later.

DEVOLUCIONES

La mayoría de las tiendas en línea tienen la opción de devolución gratis si no te queda lo que compraste o no es lo que esperabas, solo asegúrate de leer sus políticas de devolución con cuidado. Cuando se trata de tiendas como Zara, tienes la opción de devolverlo por paquetería o en la tienda, yo lo hice con una falda que no me gustó cómo lucía en mí y una playra con una tela de muy mala calidad, fueron super amables y a las 24 hrs ya tenía mi dinero de vuelta.

IN STORE PICK UPS

Another way of not paying for shipping if you’ve got the time to do it, is opt for the in store pick up of your package, a lot of stores will give you that option nowadays for free, as most of the times they only have to pack up items they already have there.

RECOGER EN TIENDA

Otra manera de no pagar envío si tienes tiempo de hacerlo, es optar por recoger tu paquete en tienda, muchas tiendas tienen esa opción ahora y es gratis, ya que la mayoría de las veces sólo tienen que empacar cosas que ya están en su almacén, esta es también una buena opción, ya que a veces hay prendas que ves en línea pero no encuentras en tu tienda más cercana.

PAYPAL

So, I get it, you’re terrified of sharing your credit card information online, these days there are plenty of payment options where the site doesn’t handle your information, just like PayPal, I’d recommend you try this if you’re really afraid of entering your info in every site you purchase stuff from.

Ok, lo entiendo, te da pavor compartir la información de tu tarjeta de crédito en internet, pero actualmente podemos encontrar opciones donde el sitio no maneja esa información, Ösom por ejemplo te da la opción de pagar en efectivo al recibir tu paquete y Kichink te da la opción de pagar en efectivo en un Oxxo, y la mayoría de las tiendas ahora tienen la opción de usar PayPal, así sólo metes la información de tu tarjeta en un sólo sitio que después la distribuye a otros sitios donde compres pero de manera super segura.

READ THE REVIEWS

Sites like Zaful and SheIn can be quite tempting and daunting if it’s the first time you’re buying from them, sites like Wish and Aliexpress are even more terrifying as we’ve all seen those horror stories online where you can see what the product looked like on the site and what it looks like IRL, so my tip here is, once again, common sense, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, and two, make sure you read all the reviews, for whatever it is you want to buy, when I order from sites like Zaful and SheIn I make sure I do this as well as look at customer pictures that you can find either on their site or their instagram, I also pay close attention to size charts as asian sizes are a bit smaller than sizes in America or Europe, so I read that and based on that I will maybe order a size up. Another important thing to do is read the description of materials this way you can make sure that you’re getting the fabric you’re seeing on the picture and not something else, and just remember, it’s going to take some time getting your parcels from this kind of sites, so patience.

LEE LAS RESEÑAS

Sitios como Zaful y SheIn pueden ser bastante tentadores pero atemorizantes si es la primera vez que compras en ellos, sitios como Wish y Aliexpress dan aún más miedo porque creo que todos hemos visto esas historias de terror onde ves cómo se veía el producto en línea y cómo se ve en la vida real, mi consejo aquí es, nuevamente sentido común, si suena demasiado bueno para ser real, probablemente lo es, y dos, asegúrate de leer las reseñas de lo que sea que vayas a comprar, cuando yo ordeno cosas de sitios como Zaful y SheIn me aseguro de hacer esto y además de ver fotos de otros clientes, estas las puedes encontrar en su sitio o cuenta de instagram, además siempre presto mucha atención a las tablas de tallas ya que las tallas asiáticas tienden a ser un poco más reducidas que las europeas o americanas, así que leo la tabla y basada en las medidas pido una talla arriba o aveces hasta dos. Otra cosa que es importante hacer es leer la descripción de materiales, así te aseguras de que la tela es la misma que la que ves en la fotografía y no algo mas, y recuerda que los envíos de esta clase de tienda suelen tomar bastante tiempo en llegar.
