Hey guys like I told you on another post, I spent last weekend in Guanajuato, and like I promised then, here’s my travel guide, so click through to find out more about this beautiful colonial mexican town.
Hola! Como te platiqué en un post anterior, el finde pasado estuve en Guanajuato, y como te prometí entonces, aquí está mi guía de viaje, así que dale click para leer más sobre éste hermoso pueblo colonial en México.
Okay, so first things first, Guanajuato is located in central Mexico, in the State of Guanajuato, about 45 minutes from León, the capital. Like I shared with you on that previous post, Guanajuato was key in Mexico’s independence in the 1800’s, as a colonial town it has beautiful architecture, and it’s plagued with tunnels and alleys that make the perfect place for weekend getaways, which atracts lots of tourists every year.
Ok, empiezo contándote que Guanajuato está en el centro de México, en el estado de Guanajuato, a unos 45 minutos de León, la capital. Como te comentaba en aquel post, Guanajuato fue clave en la independencia de México en el siglo XIX, debido a que es un pueblo colonial su arquitectura es hermosa y está plagado con túneles y callejones que lo hacen el lugar perfecto para una salida de fin de semana, lo cual atrae muchos turistas cada año.
Guanajuato is a town with lots of history and culture, you’ll find many beautiful museums and historical places to visit, as well as an impressive array of cultural events, from street performers outside Juarez Theatre, to GIFF (Guanajuato International Film Festival) to Festival Cervantino.
Guanajuato está lleno de historia y cultura, emcontrarás una cantidad grandiosa de museos y lugares históricos qué visitar, como la Alóndiga de Granaditas, así como una cantidad impresionante de actividades culturales, desde espectáculos callejeros, algunos de estos afuera del Teatro Juárez, al Festival Internacional de Cine de Guanajuato, al Festival Cervantino.
Something that I love about this town is that there’s a great variety of places to eat (plus, you can have some really good food for little buck) and have fun, for such a small town it has an impressive nightlife. This time we went to a bar that I can totally recommend, called La inundación de 1805, and you can find it behind Juarez Theatre, but if you’re more of the clubbing kind, The Grill is an amazing choice to dance the night away. If you’re having trouble finding what to have for lunch you can go to Plazuela de San Fernando, which is a square where you’ll find plenty of choices, we had lunch al El Cerro de las Ranas, I had been there before, and the food’s still really good if you’re in the mood for some mexican food, if you’re looking for a more healthy choice you’ll find a place called Bossanova, where there’s plenty of things to chose from, I totally recommend the Ratatouille, it was delicious!
Algo que me encanta de Guanajuato es que es un lugar con mucha variedad de lugares para comer (además de que es barato!) y divertirse, para un lugar tan pequeño tiene mucha vida nocturna. En esta ocasión fuimos a un bar que les recomiendo un montón, llamado La inundación de 1805, y lo pueden encontrar a espaldas del Teatro Juárez, pero si tu plan es más de ir a bailar te recomiendo El Grill. Si no sabes qué comer o dónde en la Plazuela de San Fernando hay varias opciones, nosotros comimos en El Cerro de las Ranas, ya había comido ahí hace algunos años y la verdad es que si traes antojo de comida mexicana es una buena opción, si traes antojo de algo más sano ahí mismo encuentras el lugar donde cenamos llamado Bossanova y hay muchas opciones deli para elegir, te recomiendo el Ratatouille, ¡estaba riquísimo!
Something to consider when planing your trip is that although there’s plenty of options as to where to stay, is that Guanajuato is super touristy, so you might want to make a reservation with some time ahead, there’s options for every budget, you can find some really cool hostels for close to nothing, there’re more fancy hotel options, and even some air b&b’s, so plan ahead so you won’t have any trouble.
Toma en cuenta a la hora de planear tu viaje que aunque hay muchas opciones de hospedaje, Guanajuato es un lugar súper turístico, así que te recomiendo que hagas tu reservación con tiempo, hay opciones para todos los presupuestos, desde hostales, hoteles más fancys y los famosos air b&b’s, así que planea todo con tiempo para que no te topes con ninguna sorpresa.
What to wear? Guanajuato’s style is super relaxed and you will see a mixture of styles, but the thing they all have in common is the low key air they have, check out my previous post to get an idea of what you might wear, and unless you’re feeling super brave and adveturous, heels are definitely a no no.
¿Qué me pongo? El estilo de Guanajuato es súper relax, verás una mezcla de estilos e influencias, pero lo que todos tienen en común es lo effortless que se ven puedes ver mi post anterior para tener una idea, y a menos que te sientas súper valiente y aventurera, los tacones son un no definitivo.

2018 UPDATE
So, I thought it was time to update this one since Bae and I went back to Guanajuato about a month ago and we discovered many more things to do, see and eat. This time we went with friend couples and it was a different approach than last time, so I’ll tell you a little bit more about my discoveries on this trip.
Pensé que era momento de actualizar éste post ya que Bae y yo fuimos a Guanajuato otra vez hace un mes, y encontramos más cosas que hacer, ver y comer. En ésta ocasión fuimos con parejas de amigos y fue algo diferente a la última vez, así que les cuento un poco más.
So, in Guanajuato there’s this place called “El Pípila” and it is at the top of a mountain, where you can see the whole city below, to be honest it is a tourist trap but the view is worth it, tip, there’s a funicular that takes you all the way up and I think it’s about $50MXN for a round trip and it saves you A TON of walking uphill, once up there the view is gorgeous.
El mirador del Pípila es algo súper turístico pero la vista lo vale, ¿un tip? toma el funicular que te lleva hasta arriba en sólo tres minutos y te ahorra la caminada, pagas $50 y es viaje redondo, ya estando ahí la vista es hermosa.
Also, make sure to visit the Alóndiga de Granaditas, it was there where Mexican Independence War began and it is now a really cool museum, plus it’s free on Sundays for Mexicans! Sorry people coming from other countries lol.
Asegúrate de visitar la Alóndiga de Granaditas, donde comenzó la Guerra de Independencia y ahora es un museo muy lindo, además, ¡los domingos los Mexicanos entramos gratis! Lo lamento extranjeros 🙁
Like I said when I first published this post there’s lots of places to eat and drink, I’d recommend just walking around and daring to go into random places and giving them a try, that’s how you find the best food in Mexico, a tip? Avoid restaurants overlooking the cathedral, they may be tempting to eat at cause of the view, but the food in my experience isn’t good and overpriced.
Como les decía cuando publiqué esto por primera vez, hay montones de lugares para comer y beber, yo recomendaría que camines y entres a los lugares que llamen tu atención, así encontramos la mejor comida en México, ¿otro tip? evita los restaurantes frente a la Basílica, pueden llamar tu atención por la vista, pero la comida en mi experiencia no es buena y es cara.
Another thing I’d avoid is the wax museum, is really not worth it, I was so disappointed when we went in, plus they charge more for pictures and the sculptures aren’t even worth it.
Otro lugar que yo evitaría es el museo de cera, la verdad no vale la pena, yo salí muy decepcionada, además te cobran más si quieres tomar fotos y las esculturas no lo valen.
Make sure to book your stay in advance since it is a highly touristic place so there’s always a risk you won’t find lodging if you leave it for the last minute.
Asegúrate de reservar un hotel con tiempo ya que es un lugar altamente turístico así que siempre corres el riesgo de quedarte sin hospedaje si lo dejas al último.
