Hi guys! Some of you have asked me about Día de Muertos here in Mexico, so I decided that today that we’re celebrating it I might as well share a bit about it with you. So, Día de Muertos or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican ancient tradition, it’s been celebrated since well before the Spanish came, nowadays it starts on November 1st (when people remember kids and infants who passed away way before their time) and continues until November 2nd, when we remember all our loved ones who’re no longer with us.
¡Hola! Algunos de ustedes (sobre todo mis lectores que no son Mexicanos) me han preguntado sobre el Día de Muertos en México, así que decidí que hoy que lo estamos celebrando, compartiría un poquito sobre él contigo. El Día de Muertos, es una tradición Mexicana que es milenaria, se ha festejado desde antes de la llegada de los Españoles, comienza el 1o de Noviembre, (éste día se recuerda a todos aquellos niños que se fueron antes de tiempo) y continúa hasta el 2 de Noviembre, cuando recordamos a todos los adultos que ya no están con nosotros.
In many places of the world death is a taboo subject, but here in Mexico is just another part of life, you could say we mock it, we like to think of it as a natural part of life and nothing to be afraid of, so that’s why it is such a celebration for us.
En muchos lugares del mundo hablar de la muerte es tabú, pero aquí en México lo vemos como otra parte de la vida, y hasta cierto punto nos burlamos de ella, creemos que es una parte natural de la vida y nada de qué temer, es por ésto que es una celebración.
In my city we have this big festival called Festival de las Calaveras, which is a festival that lasts for a couple of weeks with lots of food, cultural events, and stuff related to the celebration, we also take this chance to remember José Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican printmaker and engraver originary from Aguascalientes, whose work focuses on the beautiful Catrina.
En mi ciudad tenemos un gran festival llamado Festival de las Calaveras, que dura un par de semanas, y en él hay mucha comida, eventos culturales y cosas relacionadas a la época, además aprovechamos para recordar a José Guadalupe Posada, un grabador Mexicano, originario de Aguascalientes, cuyo trabajo se enfocó en la hermosa Catrina y las calaveras.
This celebration is for remembering and honoring those who’ve passed away, that’s why one of the traditions is making beautiful altars in their honor, which are decorated with tissue paper, that person’s favorite food from when he/she was alive, candles, Cempazuchitl flowers (marigolds), and lots of symbolic elements such as salt, dirt, marigold petals, water, and so on.
Ésta celebración es para recordar y honrar a nuestros muertos, es por eso que una de las tradiciones es hacer bellísimos altares en su honor, los cuales se decoran con papel picado, la comida favorita de la persona fallecida, velas, flores de Cemazuchitl, y otros elementos simbólicos como sal, tierra, pétalos de las mismas flores, agua, etc.
There are specific areas of the country that are famous for their celebrations, such as Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, Oaxaca, Yucatán, etc. but what they all have in common is the tradition, the color, food, the pan de muerto, flowers.
Hay ciertos estados de la república famosos por sus celebraciones, como Michoacán, Oaxaca, Yucatán, etc. pero lo que todos tienen en común son la tradición, el color, la comida, el pan de muerto, las flores.
Sadly over the last years with globalization and Mexico being so close to the border with the United States people have started to let the Halloween influence seep through and many people do not celebrate and acknowledge Día de muertos, which is a terrible thing, but now people are noticing and many new families are raising their kids to celebrate Día de Muertos instead of Halloween, which I think is amazing.
Trístemente durante los últimos años con la globalización y el hecho de que México está tan cerca de la frontera, la gente ha dejado que la influencia de Halloween permeé nuestras tradiciones y mucha gente ha dejado de celebrar el Día de Muertos, lo cual es terrible, afortunadamente durante los últimos años mucha gente lo ha notado y muchas nuevas familias están criando a sus hijos para que celebren Día de Muertos en lugar de Halloween, lo cual me parece maravilloso.
