Hey there! I think this post is long overdue, as you know, Bae and I visited NYC and DC last summer, and even though I did post my DC travel diary, NYC travel diary (parts 1, 2 and 3) and my NYC travel guide, I never actually got around to posting this so I think it is time.
¡Hola! Ya les debía éste post desde hace rato, como saben Bae y yo fuimos a Nueva York y DC el verano pasado y a pesar de que les compartí mi diario de viaje de DC, mi diario de viaje de NY (partes 1, 2 y 3) y mi guía de viaje de NY, nunca terminé de compartirles esta entrada y creo que es tiempo de hacerlo.
A little background on why I think this is an important post to me, when I was 22 I lived in the DMV area as an Au Pair for a year, and it was a really key year in my life and who I am today, I mark my life as a before and after, you know? So living only 30 minutes away from the district I got to spend a lot of weekend walking around its beautiful streets, I fell in love, now I know I may not know everything that there’s to know about DC, but who really does? It’s a huge place with LOTS of thing to do, but I want to share my tips and experiences with you.
Un poco de porqué creo que esta entrada es importante para mi, cuando tenía 22 años viví en el área de DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) como Au Pair por un año y fue un año clave en mi vida y en quien soy hoy, marcó mi vida como un antes y después, al vivir a solo 30 minutos de DC pude pasar muchos fines de semana caminando por sis calles, y me enamoré, ahora, ya sé que no sé todo lo que hay que saber de DC, pero en realidad ¿quién sí? Es un lugar enorme con MUCHAS cosas que hacer, pero quiero compartirles lo que sí sé.
WHERE TO EAT | DÓNDE COMER
Just like NY, the District has some really great places to eat at (one tip I’ll never forget is stay away from food at the museums, overpriced and bad) and there’re options for every budget and there’s always a new place to try as well as all time favorites that have been there for years.
Tal como NY, el Distrito tiene lugares geniales para comer (¿un tip? aléjate de la comida en los museos, es cara y mala) hay opciones para cada presupuesto y siempre hay un nuevo lugar para probar, al igual que lugares de ya mucha tradición.
One of the places I recall the most is pizzeria 2 Amys in Cathedral Heights, it’s got one of the best pizza’s I’ve had! Adams Morgan is also a popular destination if you’re looking for cool new places to try, plus it’s always a fun zone to walk around at night, tons of nightlife. Chinatown has also lots of places to try, from more trendy things to traditional little places that you can find by Yelping them or with Foursquare’s help.
Uno de los lugares que más recuerdo (porque para llegar tuve que caminar un ratote de subida) es la pizzería 2 Amys en Cathedral Heights, ¡es una de las mejores que he probado! Adams Morgan también es un destino popular si buscas cosas nuevas que probar, además el área en sí es cool, tiene mucha vida nocturna. Chinatown también ofrece muchos lugares interesantes, desde cosas muy trendy hasta cosas más tradicionales, la verdad es que un consejo sería usar Foursquare para encontrar los mejores lugares recomendados por lugareños.
The bloomingdale area has affordable and delicious restaurants to try, so it’s a must visit. This I discovered on my most recent visit last year. But really DC has lots of things to offer foodwise, so my tip is select an area and just Yelp it!

They say there’s so many things to do and see in DC that even if you did a different one everday for a year you’d still have left stuff to do at the end of the year, I don’t know if that’s a fact but there are certainly lots and lots of things to do.
Dicen que hay tantas cosas qué hacer y ver en DC que aún si cada día durante un año hicieras algo diferente, al final del año aún faltarían cosas, no sé si sea cierto, pero sin duda es un lugar con muchas cosas por experimentar.
For starters all Smithsonian museums are free, so take advantage of that! The Air and Space Museum is great if you’re travelling with kids, and if you’re not it’s also great! One of my favorite places to visit is the Botanical Garden, it’s seriously amazing and relaxing.
Para empezar, todos los museos del Smithsonian son gratis, así que ¡aprovecha eso! El museo del aire y el espacio es genial si viajas con niños y aunque no, uno de mis lugares favoritos para visitar es el Jardín Botánico, es hermoso y relajante.
There’s also the monuments that even if they’re super touristy are a must if it’s your first time there, on that note, you can also take tours of the Capitol, I’ve never done it, but I hear it’s pretty cool.
Los monumentos son algo super turístico, pero si es tu primera visita, son algo que no te puedes perder, relacionado a eso, hay tours que puedes tomar para ver el Capitolio por dentro, nunca lo he hecho, pero dicen que es bastante cool.
You can also visit the National Zoo which has an amazing event during Christmas time called The Zoo lights which is beautiful, they basically cover the whole place with Christmas lights, so it’s pretty cool to watch.
El Zoológico Nacional también es otro lugar con entrada gratis y tiene un evento cada año en navidad que se me hace bastante lindo, llamado The Zoo lights, basicamente cubren el lugar con luces navideñas y es algo agradable que ver.
During summer time you can spend your days by the waterfront and do some kayaking in the Potomac river! Having picnics by the National Mall is also a popular activity come summer, and if you’re lucky enough to be there on a 4th of July I recommend you do it and stay for the fireworks!
Durante el verano puedes pasar el día por la orilla del Río Potomac y hacer kayak, hacer un picnic en el National Mall es una actividad popular en ésta época del año y si tienes la oportunidad de estar ahí un 4 de Julio te mega recomiendo que la aproveches y veas los fuegos artificiales.
Go to a show or concert, there are many places to do this, be it the Verizon Center or smaller spaces like the Warner Theater, you do not want to miss this opportunity. If you’re a sports fan you can catch a Hockey game and cheer on for the Caps, you can also go to a Redskins game (please don’t root for them haha) or have an AMAZING time at a Nats game if you’re more into baseball.
Ve a un concierto, hay montones de lugares para hacerlo, ya sea el Verizon Center o algún lugar más pequeño como el Teatro Warner, no quieres perderte la oportunidad. Si eres muy fan de los deportes puedes ir a un juego de hockey y apoyar a los Caps, puedes ir a un juego de los Redskins si te gusta el americano o pasarla super bien en un juego de los Nationals si eres más de baseball.
Make sure to stop by Georgetown and grab a coffee to walk around its beautiful streets and while you’re there stop by the University, it’s a beautiful building! Also, if you’re a horror movies fan, you don’t want to miss stopping by the stairs that appear on The Exorcist!
Asegúrate de visitar Georgetown y comprar un café para caminar por sus bellas calles, y ya que estás ahí, pasa a la universidad, el edificio es hermoso. Además si eres cinéfilo, no quieres perderte la oportunidad de visitar las famosas escaleras de El Exorcista.
Arlington and Old Town Alexandria are also a must, while they’re actually in Virginia they’re just a metro ride away and are beautiful places, I’d say especially Old Town! Now, I don’t want to make this huge so, just, do your research beforehand and have fun exploring.
Arlington y Old Town Alexandria son lugares que debes conocer, aunque en realidad están en Virginia, están a tan solo un viaje en metro y son lugares muy lindos, ¡en especial Old Town! Ya no quiero extenderme tanto, así que investiga antes y diviértete explorando.
WHERE TO STAY | DÓNDE QUEDARSE
These days Air B&B is the key to traveling and experiencing the cities like a local, but if you’re still more into the whole hotel experience or you’d rather stay at a hostel here are my recommendations.
En esta época los Air B&B son la clave para viajar y experimentar las ciudades como un lugareño, pero si aún eres más de la idea de un hotel o preferirías un hostal aquí mis recomendaciones.
One cool thing about DC is that there’s plenty of boutique hotels to stay at that are cool and affordable, on my last trip I saw that they now have The Pod DC located in Chinatown, while I haven’t stayed there, I’ve been to a Pod in NYC and I’d totally recommend it.
Algo que está padre en DC es que hay muchos hotel boutique que son bastante accesibles, en mi viaje pasado vi que ya abrieron un Pod ubicado en Chinatown, aunque no me he hospedado en él, lo he hecho en el Pod en Nueva York y lo recomendaría bastante.
If you want to go for a bigger hotel there’s always the option of staying at The W which has a great rooftop view of the White House. But what I’d really suggest is that you plan your trip and see what the main focus of your trip will be, is it nightlife? Maybe The LINE on Adams Morgan is good for you, is it culture? Then stay somewhere close to museums and monuments, and so on.
Si te gustan los hoteles grandes siempre puedes hospedarte en el W, que tiene una excelente vista de la Casa Blanca. Pero la verdad es que yo sugeriría que planees tu viaje y veas en qué zonas te quieres enfocar, si tienes ganas de ir de fiesta quizá The LINE en Adams Morgan sea la mejor opción, si te vas a enfocar en la parte cultural, entonces busca un lugar cerca de los museos, y así sucesivamente.
WHERE TO SHOP | DÓNDE COMPRAR
Can I say everywhere? haha, ok no, but seriously, there’s tons of options to shop in the District, from the luxurious City Centre to an amazing TJ Maxx that I love right outside Metro Center station.
¡En todos lados! ok, no, pero en serio, hay muchas opciones para ir de compras, desde el lujoso City Centre hasta un increíble TJ Maxx que me encanta justo afuera de la estación Metro Center.
If you’re looking for tons of boutiques then you want to go to Georgetown where you can find everything from High Street Fashion to ZARA, another tip? Take the metro to Pentagon City, it’s a nice mall with some outlet stores and regular stores.
Si eres más de boutiques, puedes ir a Georgetown donde puedes encontrar desde diseñadores hasta ZARA. ¿Otro tip? toma el metro a Pentagon City, es un centro comercial bonito con montones de tiendas, desde outlets hasta tiendas como Macy’s.
