So, a couple of months ago I went on vacation to visit one of my bffs to Mérida, which is in Yucatán; Mérida and in general the state of Yucatán is a very touristic place in Mexico, I’d never been there and I had a great time, so I’d like to share with you some of the things I learned that might be useful if you’re planning to visit.

Hace un par de meses fui de vacaciones a visitar a una de mis mejores amigas a Mérida, que está en Yucatán; Mérida, y el estado de Yucatán en general, es un lugar muy turístico en México, nunca había ido pero me la pasé increíble, así que me gustaría compartirles algunas de las cosas que aprendí que quizá sean de utilidad si estás planeando visitar.
WHERE TO STAY
Yucatan is a hugely turistic place, so there are plenty of hotels, hostels and air bnb‘s to choose from that will adjust to your needs and budget.

Yucatán es un lugar muy turístico, por lo que hay bastantes hoteles, hostales y air bnb‘s para elegir, seguro encuentras algo que se ajuste a tus necesidades y presupuesto.
WHAT TO DO
There are so many different things to do in Yucatán, from eco turism, to shopping, there’s something for every age and interest, I’m going to list just a few of the things you can do.

QUÉ HACER
Hay tantas cosas diferentes qué hacer en Yucatán, desde eco turismo hasta compras, hay algo para cada grupo de edad e interés, les voy a enlistar solo algunas de las cosas que puedes hacer.
SINKHOLES
The Yucatan peninsula is full of sinkholes that have been filled with water over thousands of years creating natural crystaline pools where you can go for a swim, there are some that are underground, cave like, and some others that are open, when I went there we visited the ones at Homun, you can get there by car (it’s a one hour drive from Mérida) and hire a moto taxi that will take you to all the different “cenotes” in that area, you decide at the end of the tour how much you want to pay your guide. Each “cenote” has a cost of around 30 pesos which is close to 1.50 USD, you can rent a life vest at the entrance of each one or with your tour guide before going of to the cenotes, this is certainly an experience you can’t miss.

CENOTES
La península de Yucatán está llena de sumideros que se han ido llenando de agua con el paso de miles de años, creando albercas cristalinas llamadas cenotes en las que puedes ir a nadar, algunos están bajo tierra en una especie de cueva, otros son abiertos, cuando fui visitamos los que están en Homún, puedes llegar manejando (está a una hora de Mérida) y contratar un moto taxi al llegar al pueblito, este te lleva a todos los cenotes que elijas en esa área y al final decides cuánto quieres pagarle a tu guía. La entrada a cada cenote tiene un costo de 30 pesos y puedes rentar ahí un chaleco salvavidas o al principio del tour con tu guía (esta es la mejor opción pues es más barato), los cenotes son una experiencia que no te puedes perder.
CHICHÉN ITZÁ
One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, Chichen Itza is one of the most important archeological sites of the Mayan culture. This is certainly another experience you can not miss if you’re in Yucatan, the place is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. To get there I suggest you get up early and make the hour and a half drive from Merida, you want to get there as soon as they open because it can get really, really hot and there are few places with shade to stand underneath. Make sure to bring a hat and sunscreen cause otherwise you’ll get sunburned, you can also opt to wear something long sleeved like I did, cause I burn really easily and didn’t want to risk it, and please don’t forget to wear comfy shoes as you’ll be walking a lot.
When you get there you can choose to hire a guide to give you the tour or you can do it yourself, we chose to spare the guide and just walked around taking in the pyramid and ancient buildings; the entrance has three different prices depending on where you’re from, foreign citizens get one fare, Mexican citizens from out of state get another one and Yucatan residents get the lowest one, so make sure to bring your ID with you.

CHICHÉN ITZÁ
Una de las Siete Maravillas del Mundo Moderno, Chichén Itzá es uno de los sitios arqueológicos más importantes de la cultura Maya. Esta es otra experiencia que sin lugar a dudas no puedes perderte si estás en Yucatán, el lugar es una de los cosas más impresionantes que he visto. Para llegar ahí te sugiero que te levantes temprano y manejes la hora y media desde Mérida, ya que querrás llegar ahí antes de que abran pues se llena y más tarde hace mucho, mucho calor y hay pocos lugares con sombra. Asegúrate de llevar sombrero y protector solar porque si no te quemarás muchísimo con el sol, puedes también optar por llevar manga larga como yo hice, porque me quemo muy fácil y no quería arriesgarme, y por favor no olvides llevar zapatos cómodos porque caminarás mucho.
Cuando llegues puedes elegir contratar un guía para el tour o puedes hacer el recorrido tú solo, nosotros elegimos esta opción y sólo caminamos por el sitio admirando la pirámide y los edificios antiguos; el costo de la entrada varía y tiene tres tarifas distintas, una para extranjeros, otra para residentes del estado de Yucatán y otra para Mexicanos de fuera del estado, así que asegúrate de llevar tu identificación.
MUSEUMS
Merida has a lot of museums, one that you do not want to miss is the Mayan World Museum located on calle 60, it is a great experience, and like Chichen Itzá has different fares depending on where you’re from. You can also visit the one at Palacio Cantón on Paseo de Montejo which is the regional antropology museum, this one is worth the visit just to admire the architechture of the building as it is located on a 1910’s building.

MUSEOS
Mérida tiene muchos museos, el que no te quieres perder es el Gran Museo del Mundo Maya ubicado en la calle 60, es impresionante, y como Chichén Itzá tiene diferentes precios dependiendo tu lugar de origen. También puedes visitar el Palacio Cantón sobre Paseo de Montejo que es donde se ubica el Museo Regional de Antropología, este vale la pena solo por la arquitectura ya que es un edificio de principios del siglo XX.
MÉRIDA
The city of Merida is probably the place everyone stays when in Yucatan, not only because there’s a lot of touristic atractions surrounding it, but because it is a beautiful city worth visiting, the buildings on Paseo de Montejo, one of its most famous avenues, are beautiful, you can go out on a Sunday morning and ride a bicycle along it on an event called bici ruta, downtown has also its charms like the cathedral which is the oldest one in Mexico, you can go for a stroll along one of the many parks you’ll find in the city, or shopping in one of its many malls, whatever it is you choose to do I bet you’ll have a great time getting to know the city.

MÉRIDA
La ciudad de Mérida es probablemente donde todos nos quedamos cuando vamos a Yucatán, no solo porque hay muchos lugares turísticos a su alrededor, si no porque es una bella ciudad que vale la pena conocer, los edificios en Paseo de Montejo, una de sus avenidas principales, son hermosos, puedes ir un domingo en la mañana a andar en bici a lo largo de esta en un evento llamado bici ruta, el centro tiene su encanto, como la catedral que es la más antigua de México, puedes ir a dar un paseo en uno de sus muchos parques o de compras en alguno de sus centros comerciales, lo que sea que decidas hacer te apuesto que te divertirás conociendo la ciudad.
CELESTÚN
One of my dreams has always been to go flamingo watching, and I recently fulfilled that wish when I went to the Biosphere Reserve in Celestun, which is an hour and a half away from Merida, so you can get there with a short drive. Once you get there you have to book a tour because that’s the only way to see the flamingos and the mangrove, the tour is 1500 pesos, about 75 dollars, for a boat that can have up to 6 people, you can pay the tour just for yourself and your group or if your group is less than 6 people you can always wait for someone else to arrive and split the cost.
The tour is an hour and a half long and they take you to see the flamingos, the best time of the year to be able to see them is between december and february, but when I went there in march I was lucky enough to be able to see a lot of them. After the flamingos the boat heads back and stops by the mangrove area and a waterhole of crystaline water where you can swim (I’d not recommend this as this is a crocodile heavy area and when I went there we saw two crocodiles swimming there), after 15 minutes there you head back to the boat and then it makes the way back to the shore.
Of course the reserve isn’t the only thing you can do in Celestun, when I went there we drove to the beach town where we went into one of the hotels there for some drinks, a swim in the beautiful turquoise sea and lunch right by the beach, so that’s something else you can do once you’re there.

CELESTÚN
Una de las cosas que siempre había querido hacer era ver a los flamencos, fue algo que pude tachar de mi lista cuando fui a la Reserva de la Biósfera en Celestún, que está a una hora y media de Mérida. Cuando llegas ahí es necesario que contrates un tour porque es la única manera de ver los flamencos y el manglar, el tour cuesta 1500 pesos y es una lancha que puede llevar hasta seis personas, puedes pagar el tour para una sola persona o un grupo , pero si tu grupo es de menos puedes esperar a que llegue más gente y dividir el costo.
El tour dura una hora y media y te llevan a ver a los flamencos, la mejor época para verlos es de diciembre a febrero, pero yo fui en marzo y tuve la suerte de ver muchos. Después de ver a los flamencos la lancha va de vuelta y se para en el manglar y el ojo de agua cristalina donde puedes nadar (yo no lo recomiendo porque es un área de muchos cocodrilos y cuando fui vimos dos cocodrilos nadando ahí), después de 15 minutos en ese lugar la lancha va de vuelta a la orilla.
Obviamente eso no es lo único que puedes hacer en Celestún, nosotros manejamos al pueblito en la playa y entramos a uno de los hoteles para tomarnos unas bebidas, nadar en el mar turquesa y comer junto a la playa, así que eso es también algo que puedes hacer ya estando ahí.
PUEBLOS MÁGICOS
In Mexico we have some towns called “pueblos mágicos” which translates to magical towns, these towns are mostly from colonial times and have kept their picturesque beauty and architecture, in Yucatán you can visit Izamal (pictured below) a town where every building is painted yellow or Valladolid, they’re nice places for a day trip.

PUEBLOS MÁGICOS
En México tenemos algunos pueblos llamados “pueblos mágicos“, son pueblitos y ciudades de tiempos coloniales que han mantenido su belleza pintoresca y arquitectura, en Yucatán puedes visitar Izamal (en las imágenes) un pueblito en el que cada edificio está pintado de amarillo o Valladolid, son lindos lugares para un viaje de ida y vuelta el mismo día.
ZOO
Mérida has three different zoos (if you ask me that’s an excess) you can choose between Parque Zoológico Centenario, Parque Zoológico Bicentenario Animaya and Parque Zoológico de Mulsay, I went to the Animaya one, and it was good, the entrance to this one is free, there aren’t as much animals as I thought, but we did get to see zebras, giraffes, hippos, lions, etc. my recommendation is to get there early as well, as there aren’t many shadow spots to rest at and in Mérida you can be sure it will get hot, so make sure to bring water with you.

ZOOLÓGICOS
Mérida tiene tres diferentes zoológicos (un exceso si me preguntan) y puedes elegir entre el Parque Zoológico Centenario, el Parque Zoológico Bicentenario Animaya y el Parque Zoológico de Mulsay, nosotros fuimos al Animaya, estuvo bueno, la entrada es gratuita, pero no hay tantos animales como esperaba, aún así pudimos ver cebras, jirafas, hipopótamos, leones, etc. yo te recomiendo que llegues temprano porque no hay muchos lugares en la sombra para descansar y en Mérida puedes estar seguro de que va a hacer mucho calor, así que asegúrate de llevar agua contigo.
TOURS
A great way to get to know Mérida is taking a tour bus, there are different tour buses that you can pick from, there’s the classic one that takes you to all important places in Mérida, there’s a gastronomic one, there’s the one that takes you to Chichén Itzá, so you just need to pick which one works best for you and your interests and there you go!

TURIBUS
Una excelente manera de conocer Mérida es tomando un turibus, hay diferentes clases de estos para elegir, está el clásico que te lleva a todos los puntos de interés, hay uno gastronómico, está el que te lleva a Chichén Itzá, solo es cosa de que elijas cuál se adapta a tus intereses y listo.
WHERE TO EAT
Can I just say everywhere!? Food in Yucatán is delicious, probably one of the best in the country, so just make sure you try everything you can, I loved cochinita pibil, in tacos, in tortas (sandwiches), just ugh! I loved it, I went to Progreso which is a beachside town and I ate ceviche with a cold beer, I had pan de cazón (fried tortilla with refried black beans and dogfish in a lasagna kind of style, you know, tortilla, beans, fish, tortilla, beans, fish…) seaside, I went to a bar where they bring food as long as you keep drinking (Eladio’s) and I had tamales, recado negro, pavo en escabeche, codzitos, brazo de reina, and so on, I tried dragonfruit lemonade and it was superb, and my favorite, marquesitas, which is a typical dessert from Yucatán (pictured below, they’re hard creppes filled with ground swiss cheese), and I tried delicious sorbet at one of Mérida’s oldest sorbet shops (El Colón on Paseo de Montejo), so just dare to try all the typical food you can and stay away from fast food.

DÓNDE COMER
¿Puedo decir: ¡Donde sea!? La comida yucateca es deliciosa, probablemente una de las mejores en el país, así que asegúrate de probar todo lo que puedas, yo amé la cochinita pibil en tacos y en tortas, ¡me encantó! fui a Progreso (un pueblo en la playa) y comí ceviche con una cerveza fría, comí pan de cazón (como un pastel azteca pero con frijoles y cazón) junto al mar, fui a un merendero (Eladio’s) y comí tamales, recado negro, pavo en escabeche, codzitos, brazo de reina, etc; probé una limonada de pitaya y estuvo deliciosa; y mis favoritas, las marquesitas, un postre típico de Yucatán (en la foto de abajo, como una crepa enrollada pero dura y rellena de queso suizo rallado), probé nieves deliciosas en una de las heladerías más antiguas de Mérida (El Colón en Paseo de Montejo), así que atrévete a probar toda la comida típica que puedas y aléjate de la comida rápida.
WHERE TO SHOP
Mérida has a big design culture, so you’ll find lots of local fashion brands and concept stores, I visited Casa T’hó which is amazing and a place you’ve gotta visit if you’re there. If you’re into more mainstream stores there’re shopping malls like La Isla and The Harbour, it all depends on what you’re looking for.

Mérida tiene una gran cultura de diseño, por lo que encontrarás marcas locales de moda y concept stores, yo visité Casa T’hó que es increíble y un lugar al que tienes que ir si estás en la ciudad. Si buscas tiendas de marcas más comerciales hay centros comerciales como La Isla y The Harbour, depende de lo que estés buscando.
