GUEST POST: WHAT’S IT LIKE DATING A FASHION BLOGGER

Hi there guys, today I want to share with you a very special post, why? well, because my boyfriend is taking over JUSTLIKEHEAVEN today and he’s sharing a bit of what he thinks it’s like dating a fashion blogger and what it means, he originally wrote the post in spanish, but today you’ll find the translated version in english in bold

¡Hola! Hoy quiero compartirles éste post mega especial, ¿por qué? pues les cuento que mi novio se está apoderando de JUSTLIKEHEAVEN por hoy y les va a contar un poco de lo que es ser novio de una blogger de moda y lo que significa para él.

¿Qué significa ser novio de una “fashion blogger”? Pues significa tomar muchas fotos para empezar, aún sin tener la menor idea del correcto funcionamiento de una cámara fotográfica, el encuadre o la luz, produciendo un resultado que a veces deja que desear y que a mi entender dista mucho de los estándares de calidad necesarios para ser publicados, lo bueno es que esta no es mi decisión.

What does it mean to be a fashion blogger’s boyfriend? Well, for starters it means taking lots of pictures, without even knowing the proper workings of a camera, frame composition or lighting, leaving you with a result that leaves a great deal to be desired and that to my understanding is far away from quality standards to be published, the good thing, this is not my decision to make.

Ya en serio, para mí ha sido un proceso de apreciación, de darle un nuevo significado a un aspecto de la cultura al que no le había dedicado su debida atención; la ropa. Para mí, la indumentaria que utilizo, la escojo, (las más de las veces no diré que siempre), en base a su funcionalidad por sobre el valor estético, salvo que la función de la misma sea el valor estético per se, entiéndanse cuando hay que verse elegante. Sin embargo, poco a poco, voy encontrando que hay mucho más que eso.

Speaking seriously, to me it’s been an apreciation process, giving a neglected side of culture a new meaning; clothing. To me, the clothes I wear, I choose them, (most of the times, but not always), based on their functionality over their aesthetic value, except when the function of these is their aesthetic value per se, understanding this as times when one needs to look elegant. However, little by little, I’ve come to find there’s so much more to it.

Cuando se me hablaba de moda, pensaba en un concepto estadístico “la cantidad de veces que se repite un dato dentro de un conjunto.” Ahora veo que más que un concepto de repetición, la moda es individualidad, te permite ser único, proyectarte a ti mismo; es el medio más directo para expresar subjetividad, dado que basta con un vistazo para apreciarlo, y de manera universal cualquiera — con mayor o menor grado de apreciación — lo nota.

When people spoke to me about mode (the spanish word for fashion and mode are the same), I thought about statistics “the most-common or most-frequently occurring value in a series of data.” Now I see that it is more than a concept of repetition, fashion is individuality, it allows you to be unique, be yourself; it is the most direct way to express subjectivity since all it takes is a glance to appreciate it, and, in a universal way, anyone — with more or less degree of appreciation — notices it.

Esto me fue evidente al ver como mi novia podía lucir completamente diferente de un día a otro en función del “outfit” (creo que es la palabra) que vestía, ella me dice que es un poco como disfrazarse, jugar a ser alguien distinto todos los días, y pensándolo detenidamente, es algo que todos hacemos, en su mayoría inconscientemente. En mi caso lo pude ver reflejado en la muy extensa (quizá demasiado para mi edad) colección de playeras de Batman.

This became evident when I noticed how my girlfriend could look completely different from one day to the other depending on the outfit she was wearing, she says it’s a little bit like playing dress up, playingto be somebody different everyday, and thinking about it, is something that we all do, unconsciously mostly. In my case I could see it in the extense (maybe way too much for my age) Batman t-shirt collection.

Como mencioné al principio, hay que tomar fotos. Un “blogger”, a mi modo de ver, es alguien que se dedica a la comunicación, sea del rubro que sea, en este caso de la moda. Para ello Dany se vale de un “photoblog”, que es una manera muy visual (que no podía ser mejor para lo que nos atañe) de mostrar el contenido en una mezcla de imágenes y textos que le permiten describir las sensaciones y emociones que acompañan al “outfit” (Dado que no me acostumbro a los anglicismos y Word lo subraya en rojo, seguiré utilizando comillas), volviéndolo una experiencia integral que va más allá de la mera estética visual de la ropa, ya que, como yo lo veo, le agrega una carga emocional que la vuelve arte.

Like I mentioned at first, you need to take pictures. A blogger, to my understanding, is someone whose job is communicating, whatever the subject might be, in this case it is fashion. To achieve that, Dani uses a photoblog which is a visual way of showcasing the content in a mixture of images and text that allow her to describe the sensations and emotions that go with the outfit, turning it into a whole experience that goes beyond the mere aesthetic of the clothes, the way I see it, it adds an emotional charge that turns it into art.

Lo he visto de primera mano, cuando se me ha pedido que tome fotografías para la página, y dado que mi habilidad con la cámara es más bien limitada, la única manera en que se puede trasmitir la sensación que trasciende la estética es que la emoción que emana de ella sea intensa, y creo que lo es, lo suficiente por lo menos para que no se pierda del todo aun cuando sea retratada por un fotógrafo amateur por no decir malo. Para muestra solo hay que pasarse por alguno de los “posts” existentes en el blog, creo que no será muy difícil ver de lo que hablo.

I’ve seen it first hand, when asked to take pictures for the site, and given that my abilities with the camera are limited, the only way to transmit the sensation that transcends the aesthetic is if the emotion that emanates from her is intense, and I believe it is, enough as to not get lost when she’s photographed by an amateur phographer, not to say a bad one. To attest this you only have to stop by any of the posts on the blog, I think it wouldn’t be too hard to see what I’m talking about.

Entonces, ¿Qué es ser novio de una “fashion blogger”? Pues sí es tomar muchas fotos, pero también es aprender a apreciar algo que muchas veces damos por sentado, es encontrar nuevas maneras de comunicar, es aprender que es posible compartir con el mundo una visión de uno mismo, es un poco de arte y un poco de medios, es darse cuenta que hay medios para ser quienes queremos ser todos los días, aún si es algo completamente distinto de Lunes a Martes. Es una experiencia que a mí me ha enriquecido y que estoy seguro lo seguirá haciendo.

So, what does it mean being a fashion blogger’s boyfriend? It does involve taking lots of pictures, but it is also learning to appreciate something that most of the times we take for granted, it’s finding new ways of communication, it’s learning that it is possible to share with the world a vision of one’s self, it’s a little bit of art and a little bit of media, it’s noticing that there are ways to be whoever we want to be every day, even if it’s something completely opposite from Monday to Tuesday. It is an experience that has been fulfilling and that I’m sure will continue to enrichen me.
