Hi there guys! So, we’re back from our vacation and today I have another guest post from bae, today he’ll be talking about how he perceived style in New York City while we were there, so without any further ado, he’s second blog post for JUST LIKE HEAVEN. (Read the first one here)

EN NY NO LES IMPORTA | IN NEW YORK THEY DON’T CARE

Hace relativamente poco, Dany y yo realizamos un viaje a Nueva York, y ella me pidió que prestara especial atención en la vestimenta de las personas para que posteriormente escribiera mis impresiones y opiniones, que es lo que hago en este momento. Siendo NY una de las ciudades más cosmopolitas que existen yo estaba predispuesto a encontrarme con cosas que podrían considerarse, por lo menos en mi limitada experiencia, fuera de lo común, extravagantes quizá, sin embargo, a posteriori me doy cuenta que aún a sabiendas del carácter progresista y liberal de la ciudad  no estaba completamente preparado para lo que iba a ver en la gente que la habita. Creo que lo que encontré fácilmente se puede resumir en una frase: “A esta gente no le importa.”

Not too long ago, Dany and myself took a trip to New York, and she asked me to pay close attention to people’s clothes so that later on I could write about my impressions and opinions, which is what I’m doing now. New York being one of the most cosmopolitan cities out there I was predisposed to run into things that might be considered, in my limited experience, out of the ordinary, flamboyant maybe, however, I now realize that even though I knew about the progressive and liberal character of the city I wasn’t fully prepared for what I was to see in the people who inhabits it. I think what I found can be easily summed up in one sentence: “These people don’t care.”

Explico. En la pequeña ciudad en donde vivo pareciera que las personas están uniformadas: camisa, pantalón de mezclilla, zapatos, algunas personas con sus trajes para su trabajo de oficina, la ropa de la gente joven tiende a ser un poco más variada pero no demasiado, esto en la población masculina. Las mujeres por su parte tienden a diversificar un poco más sus atuendos, texturas, colores, otras prendas, otros cortes, pero tampoco nada que las destaque una de la otra. Y aunque siempre hay excepciones, todo parece estar dentro de un orden, una norma no escrita pero bien establecida para las vestimentas a utilizar en relación a tu género, edad y nivel socio-económico. Raro es quien desafía el Status Quo, a tal punto que cuando esto llega a suceder, cuando una persona se atreve a vestir algo verdaderamente original, es normal que al pasar la gente no pueda evitar voltearla a ver, e inclusive se puede tachar a dicha persona de estrafalaria, excéntrica o que quiere llamar la atención. Si los adjetivos son o no adecuados, es algo que carece de importancia, el punto es que es poco frecuente observar este tipo situaciones y tienen por consecuencia reacciones no siempre favorables del resto de la sociedad.

Let me explain. In the small city I live in it’d seem that people are uniformed: shirt, jeans, shoes, some people wear suits for their office jobs, youngsters’ clothes tends to be a bit different, textures, colors, other kinds of garments, different silhouettes, but nothing too out there. Although there’s always exceptions, everything seems to be in order, to follow an unspoken but well established law which dictates what you’re supposed to wear in relation to your gender, age and social status. Uncommon is that whom defies the Status Quo, up to the point that when somebody dares wear something truly original, it’s normal for people walking by to stare and even be deemed eccentric, flamboyant or be called an attention seeker. If my words of choice are or not adequate, it’s not important, the point is, it’s rare to observe these kinds of situations and they tend not to have a positive reaction from the rest of society.

Volviendo a NY, según pude observar, es tan frecuente que la gente utilice la ropa de maneras tan variadas que se ha convertido en algo normal, y la gente no te voltea ver dos veces sea lo que sea que estés utilizando: Sombreros con plumas, Si, Ropa ubercolorida, ok, Todo tipo de estampados en toda la ropa, si por favor, Hombres con tacones y maquillaje, ¿Por qué no? Debe ser algo sui generis de las grandes urbes, al fin y al cabo, cada persona es un mundo y en una ciudad donde conviven tantos mundos debe por fuerza abrirse a la diversidad que forzosamente existe y que enriquece al entorno. Más que tolerancia hacia las peculiaridades del vestido es integración en un crisol de la moda donde cada subjetivismo aporta al todo. Y es que es sencillo encontrar lo que a uno lo representa, en NY tienes la posibilidad de adquirir virtualmente cualquier prenda, accesorio o aditamento que, debidamente integrado con otros objetos, construye una imagen bastante aproximada de lo que uno es o en su defecto quiere proyectar.

Back to NY, as I was able to observe, it is so common for people to wear clothes in such different manners that it’s become something normal, and people won’t look at you twice whatever it is you’re wearing: feathered hats, yes, rainbow colored clothes, okay, any and every kind of print, yes please, men with heels and make up, why not? I guess it’s something sui generis about big cities, in the end, every person’s its universe and in a city where so many universes converge it’s imperative that they open themselves to the existent diversity that only enriches the environment. More than tolerance towards clothing peculiarities, it is integration in a mortar of fashion where each subjectivity adds to it all.  It’s just that it’s so easy to find what represents each one of us,  in NY you’ve the possibility to acquire virtually any piece of clothing, accessory or contraption that, well integrated to other objects, creates a pretty accurate image of what you are or want to project.

En cuanto a mi experiencia directa al encontrarme con tanta variedad en el vestir, más que llamarme la atención la ropa per se, me impactó la aceptación que tenía la gente para con las decisiones (en este caso textiles) de los demás, y no es que fueran apáticos, no; podías escuchar de vez en cuando un: “Me encanta tu abrigo” o “Geniales tus pantalones” (En su idioma original). No, más bien creo que es gente que respeta la máxima de “Vive y deja vivir” o “Ponte lo que quieras y que los demás también lo hagan, que al fin y al cabo ellos sabrán.” Para mí se traduce en respetar las ideas de los demás, ya sean estéticas, ideológicas, socioculturales inclusive, y es algo que yo verdaderamente admiro, me encantaría poder salir a la calle con unos shorts metálicos y un chaleco lleno de luces LEDs pero no creo que en mi contexto social sea bien visto, en inclusive podría acarrearme algún tipo de problema y esto no es correcto, a nadie más que a mi debería afectarle lo que uso o dejo de usar.

In regards to my personal experience in finding all that variety clothing wise, more that clothes getting my attention per se, I was in awe by the acceptance people give  other’s (textile) decisions, and it’s not apathy, no; you can hear a: “I love your coat” or “Cool pants.” No, I think it’s just the fact that people respect the “live and let live” mantra, or “wear what you want and let people wear what they want, it isn’t any of your business.” To me it translates in respecting other’s ideas, whether aesthetic, ideological, sociocultural even, and it’s something I truly admire, I’d love to be able to go out into the streets with metallic shorts and a vest full of LED lights, but I don’t think it’d be well looked at in my social context, en it might even cause some sort of trouble, and this isn’t right, no one else but me should be affected by what I wear or not. 

A esta gente no le importa y eso es bueno. Esta gente está conscientes de que cada quien es un individuo y tiene el derecho a expresarse de la manera en la que este decida. Quizá al principio no fue así pero poco a poco se ha normalizado y ahora es el pan de cada día. A esta gente no le interesa lo que llevas puesto y tampoco le interesa lo que pienses de lo que ellos llevan puesto y creo que todos deberíamos apuntar a ello. Qué genial que no nos importara lo que hacen o dejan de hacer los demás, que maravilla si a nosotros no nos importara el qué dirán, que no nos rigiéramos por el  “cómo te ven te tratan.” Y tras visitar esta gran ciudad, veo que no son ideas utópicas y que a todos nos convendría  salir un poco del cuadrado en el que vivimos y atrevernos a expresarnos, pero sobre todo aprender a dejar que los demás se muestren como son y que esto se refleje en la ropa que usamos todos los días, que muestre por fuera lo que muchas veces llevamos por dentro. Creo que es tiempo de que deje de importarnos.

These people don’t care and that’s good. They are aware that everyone is an individual and has the right to express themselves in the way they decide. Maybe in the beginning it wasn’t about that, but over time it’s become normal and now is part of the day to day. These people don’t care about what you’re wearing and they don’t care what you think about what they are wearing and I think we should all aim for that. How cool would it be if we didn’t care what people’ll say, if we didn’t believe that “you’re treated the way you’re perceived.” And after visiting this great city, I can see those aren’t utopian ideas and the we could all benefit from stepping out of the square we live in and dare to express ourselves, but more important than anything, let people show themselves as they are and let this show in their clothing, let the outside reflect the inside. I think it’s time we all stop caring.
